Sounds & Actions

Phase 1 - Children are taught Phase 1 in Nursery (Blue and Navy class) activities are arranged under the following seven aspects:

■ Aspect 1: General sound discrimination – environmental sounds

■ Aspect 2: General sound discrimination – instrumental sounds

■ Aspect 3: General sound discrimination – body percussion

■ Aspect 4: Rhythm and rhyme

■ Aspect 5: Alliteration

■ Aspect 6: Voice sounds

■ Aspect 7: Oral blending and segmenting

 

Phase 2 - Children are taught Phase 2 in Reception 

 

Phase 3 - Children are taught Phase 2 in Reception, this is when two (diagraph) or three (trigraph) letters become one sound.

Diagraph example: When a c and h are put together, they make the 'Ch' sound, this sound is used for the word 'chain'.

Trigraph example: When three letters make one sound 'igh', this sound is used for the word 'night'.

By the end of reception (Jet Black) your child needs to be secure in applying Phase 2 and 3 sounds to their reading and writing. 

Phase 4 - is taught in Year 1, the purpose of this phase is to consolidate children's reading and writing containing adjacent consonants and polysyllabic words.

 

Phase 5 - is taught in Year 1 

 

Phase 6 - is taught in Year 2
